What We Believe

South Soddy Baptist Church is committed to sharing the good news of salvation to everyone in our neighborhood while teaching all believers how to become more like Jesus Christ. We are also committed to making a difference in our community and sharing the good news of Jesus to the rest of the world through the support of missionary work and social media.

If you want to know what we believe and teach, below is a brief summary.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, without error, and is totally trustworthy, serving as the basis for all we teach and believe. We further believe that all Scripture testifies of Jesus Christ, the living Word made flesh.

We believe in the One and only Triune God, creator and sustainer of all. We believe that He reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each distinct Persons, but without division of nature, essence, or being.

We believe that Jesus is the eternal, perfect, sinless Son of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He was born in flesh, but existed eternally as the Word (John 1:1), and is alive even now after having been crucified, having died in the flesh, and having been resurrected on the third day to redeem fallen man, as He foretold. We believe that one day He will return and Judge the world in righteousness.

Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) of God is the third Person of the Trinity, sent by the Father to indwell and seal the believer. The Holy Spirit comforts, guides, illuminates the Scripture, and empowers the Church to do the work of Christ in the world. Evidences of His presence include a life marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

We believe that salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by works: it is a gift of God purchased with the atoning blood of Jesus Christ on Calvary, offered to those who repent of their sins and accept Jesus Christ as Savior. We further believe that since salvation is a gift and cannot be earned, neither can it be forfeited or lost.

Church Ordinances

We believe that the only two ordinances of the church are baptism and the Lord’s Supper. They are not necessary for salvation, but are to be done in obedience to the commandments of our Lord. We further believe that baptism is only for believers and should only be administered to those who have professed faith in Christ.

We believe that the only Scriptural marriage is the joining of one man and one woman (Gen. 2:24; Rom. 7:2; 1 Cor. 7:10; Eph. 5:22-23).

“Cooperation is desirable between the various Christian denominations, when the end to be attained is itself justified, and when such cooperation involves no violation of conscience or compromise of loyalty to Christ and His Word as revealed in the New Testament.” – Baptist Faith & Message, 2000

The Baptist Faith and Message

If you would like a more detailed explanation of our beliefs, we subscribe to the doctrinal statement of “The Baptist Faith and Message” as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention in 2000. You can read that doctrinal statement by clicking on the button.
